I Love You Truly: A Biographical Novel Based on the Life of Carrie Jacobs-Bond ReviewCarrie Jacobs-Bond (1862-1946) was a highly-successful composer, music publisher, and performer. She specialized in "home and hearth" songs, and her tune, "I Love You Truly" might be the most frequently-recorded piece of popular music in history. Yet, she is little-known today.
Max Morath, composer, pianist, and dean of ragtime entertainers, has made a fine effort to correct the oversight. His fictionalized autobiography, also titled "I Love You Truly," should go a long way toward restoring the respect and regard this remarkable woman enjoyed during her lifetime.
Mr. Morath proceeds from years of extensive research to take what is known of Jacobs-Bond's life (much of it from her 1927 autobiography, The Roads to Melody), and fill in blank spaces with compatible fiction, to delineate and interpret not only the composer's life, but the life of women in general, a century ago. Morath's interpretations - through the artifice of having Jacobs-Bond narrate her own story - create a believable narrative, showing the manner in which a woman of great talent, skill, and determination managed to overcome both her own health-related difficulties and the considerable social obstacles that hampered women at the turn of the nineteenth century.
