Remains To Be Scene (Polly Pepper Mysteries) ReviewOK, as did the other 1 star reviewer, I started this book with hopes of a delicious new series. As an avid whodunit fan, I enjoy all types of mysteries, from the cozy to the bloody, as long as they are reasonably intelligent and above all decently written. This one is neither. Apart from the annoying product mentions every few lines--which in this case seem to be a crutch to prevent the author from having to struggle with clever scene setting and description, the characters are pasteboard. The writer is making an error common to many new authors; he writes "about" a character or situation instead of creating it through natural dialogue. He doesn't show us what's going on, he talks about it, and there is an important difference. For example, on p. 99: "By the time the screenwriter reluctantly altered several lines of the script, as Dana had commanded, ... and the caterers had fed the cast and crew, it was nearly nine o'clock at night". We don't hear the screenwriter's reluctance, or hear Dana screeching out commands, and cannot visualize anything else going on in the scene as none of it is set before us; it is only talked about. The first 100 pages are all like this, and I was forced to stop reading before the second corpse. Many new writers begin with this clumsiness and write themselves out of it; mercifully most of them are not published until they are further along, and certainly not with this degree of unmerited enthusiasm.
