The book swings from detailed descriptions of inevitable factional battles of the city's left, constantly persecuted and divided by the ruling class, to the brief but powerful, and often violent, explosions of rage that were more common than you would think in this period.
Radical LA is exhaustively researched and detailed, focusing on the grand personalities- Upton Sinclair, Harrison Gray Otis, Eugene Debs- as well as the minor players who wished they were major. It is a clear look at the repeated frustrations of a movement that never quite broke through, but rather rode world-historical waves in both directions for decades. Only in the postwar section does the city start to look recognizable.
