Avshalomovs' Winding Way: Composers Out of China - A Chronicle Review"Avshalomovs' Winding Way" is the story of a father and a son who were pioneers in bringing together the musical traditions of Europe, Asia and America. The father, Aaron Avshalomov, was born in Russia and worked as composer and conductor in China in 1917-1949, using European musical forms to explore Chinese musical ideas. The son, Jacob Avshalomov, born in China, made music in America as composer, conductor and teacher, collaborating with many of the greatest musicians of our time.
This double autobiography assembles the letters of Aaron with narrative by Jacob to tell in their own words how two very different people overcame daunting obstacles and brought great music to appreciative audiences in China and America.
For 40 years Jacob Avshalomov was music director of the Portland (Oregon) Youth Philharmonic, in which I performed, and a pillar of the city's cultural life.
