Los Angeles Jew: A Memoir ReviewI must first say how priviledged I am to be the first one to review the book here at Amazon. I saw it advertised in The Jewish Journal and love books like this that relate the history of a particular area, town, people, etc. This book does all that and is very easy reading. I finished it within hours.
I have one discrepancy to list and one comment about the book cover. When talking about the prominent L.A. Area rabbis, mention is made of Rabbi Alfred Magnin and this is an error, which later in the book he is mentioned again this time correctly as Rabbi Edgar Magnin. I actually dressed the rabbi for his burial. And then the book cover is not given credit as most books do. It kind of drives me crazy to know exactly what street it is, as it sure looks like S. Crescent Heights Blvd. between 18th and Pico. I know that street well. Those are my only critiques with the book.
That being said, this was a lovely book, as I said, easy reading. It will bring nostalgia to any Los Angeles Jew from that era and affirmation of the area, people, places, things for all others living in L.A., as I do. I am not Jewish, but came to Los Angeles to take a job with a Jewish funeral home, and that began my love and respect for Judaism and in particular the Jews of Los Angeles. Naturally through this I became associated and familiar with all the synagogues, rabbis, cemeteries, organizations, etc. Add to that my residency on the Westside itself (where most of the book is based), and becoming very good friends with Jewish people, I know about and am familiar with just about every person, place and thing mentioned in this book so it made it very fun reading. I LOVE Jewish delicatessens and I am able to critique the chopped liver at all of them. Actually I find that the chopped liver at Gelson's Supermarkets is my favorite!! Mmmm, and the High Holidays are coming up. I always go out and buy chopped liver and whitefish salad during the holidays. Whitefish salad is VERY rare here on the West Coast-to give some more Jewish trivia.
Anyway, as you can tell, I liked the book alot and enjoyed following Mr. Brower through his life (it's really a family biography), and his neighborhoods. I know it well Martin, thanks for putting it all down on paper. It will be historically invaluable forever!!
