Looks to Die For: A Lacy Fields Mystery ReviewIn some ways, this book is a perfect comic cozy. The writing is fluid and fluent, and allowed me to become part of Lacy's world immediately. Unfortunately, as the story moved forward I became more and more irritated by its few flaws, namely:
1. The elephant in the room. Over and over again, just when one would expect Lacy to do or say a particular thing because EVERYONE would, she didn't. For example, her husband, accused of murder on the basis of eyewitness testimony that he was at the scene, swears that he never met the victim. What would ANYONE do? Try to find out who the witness is and figure out why he/she claims to have seen the husband, right? But no one ever suggests this until very late in the story, because the plot would unravel too quickly. There are other examples, and they upset one's feeling of being "in" the story.
2. Labels. I'm sorry, I find it hard to like a heroine who apparently cannot buy anything that's not a designer label. So pretentious! The occasional reference I can understand, but even someone as rich as Lacy appears to be (based on her husband's salary, of course) should not throw money around with such abandon. Give it to charity! Don't waste it on average quality goods just to impress other "in" people. I really hated this.
3. More on Character. Lacy's teenage daughter comes of as being in serious need of some tough love. I know teens have a reputation for being difficult, but this one was Beyond the Pale. Her father is accused of murder and she walks around screeching "My father is a murderer! How can I face my friends!". OK, have her say it, but Lacy should have smacked her one and explained to her that her that she (daughter) was expected to defend her father, not assume that he is a murderer. And so on. It's not so much that the daughter was a nightmare, but that Lacy didn't seem to notice. More demerits for her!Looks to Die For: A Lacy Fields Mystery Overview
